About the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore
One of 4 Papal Basilicas, this Roman Catholic Church is owned by the Holy See, even though it is not within the Vatican State territory. It is also the largest Catholic Marian Church in Rome. This Basilica honours the Virgin Mary, with Pope Sixtus III (432 – 440) overseeing it’s construction as a commemoration of Mary Mother of God.

Several buses stop along Via Liberiana.

7 am to 7 pm – Summer
7 am to 6 pm – Winter
9:30 am to 12 pm – Sundays and Holidays
The Salus Populi Romani, depicting the Blessed Virgin Mary, is located in the Basilica.
Dress conservatively – thin strapped shirts and short shorts are prohibited. As an alternative, carry a scarf to cover your shoulders and legs while visiting the Basilica.
There are many vendors around Rome that sell cheap scarves.
