About St. Peter's Basilica
Also known as Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican, St. Peter’s Basilica is one of 4 Papal Basilicas and is owned by the Holy See. This Renaissance Church in located next to the Vatican Museums, within the Vatican City State. Described as the holiest Catholic shrines and the greatest of all churches of Christendom, this is the largest church in the world. Although St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the 4 major basilicas in Rome, it is not first ranking, nor is it the Pope’s official seat. Regardless, the Pope still uses the church for most Papal liturgies and ceremonies because of it’s size and proximity to the his residence.

Photography may not be permitted in some areas.
Dress conservatively – thin strapped shirts and short shorts are prohibited. As an alternative, carry a scarf to cover your shoulders and legs while visiting the Basilica.
There are many vendors around Rome that sell cheap scarves.
Arrive early when attending papal events.
The Historical and Artistic Museum entrance is inside St Peter’s Basilica.
The Dome entrance is at the portico of the Basilica.
Vatican Grottoes is at the transept of St. Peter’s Basilica.
